A-A+

Muse Dong’s Works

Zhalong, this word does not automatically make you associate it with the red crowned crane. The red crowned crane can also hear the magical song of the Dadawa. To the ears, it may seem like a sad story, but in reality it extends out worry-free and happy moments with life struggles carved away. The legend of the story is pure and ethereal, it is about a girl who transform from a girl to a crane for the sake of self-salvation.
It was the summer of 2007, Muse Dong painted a batch of city girls with dolls that was being exhibited at my gallery. White drop with no background garrulously absorbed in their own dialogue.  Often, mixed with numerous emotions we would chat about our lives in front of a work. As of this was the reason for why works of art are created. We do not need to question it to understand. Understand what though? Life is nothing more than twigs, mapping the state of affairs of her suppressed works. These scars gradually reopened psychologically. I know, the course of creation was difficult, but without falling a few times, it is impossible to create works of art. Also, I know that this abrasive twig was pulled out intentionally, so let’s use it then. Beijing’s summer is helplessly hot, so during summer, we wait. Wait for long hours, making life ridiculous. One day, while running errands, I run into her paintings known right now as “Girl from Zhalong”. I think she floated in the water to where we can touch her, this is the very texture of life, pain dependencies. Looking back in memory, Muse Dong and her smiling eyes. They are still sweet with the knowledge of life events that had become a part of her. Zhalong is always Zhalong. It’s memory always staying the same, yet the sky changes everyday.
The sky in constant changing mode, blooming with a variety of uniquely formed clouds, the powerful sunlight penetrates through it all, radiating light on the marshland that reflects back. Its early in the morning, during sunrise, rather than sunset. A little girl chatting away with the red crowned crane, while looking into the endless horizon, the water and the sky, was playing tricks o our eyes. Under the camera lens, it seems closer, but naturally, they all seem so far away. Water and cloud in constant motion as if a girl changing clothes undecided what she wants to wear. Warm light shining into the girls’ eyes, the only thing is, she’s looking for radiance, not just any warm light but a light that produces radiance. If she doesn’t desire radiance, she would only be swallowed up by the shadows, running the purpose of the painting.
Muse Dong’s persistence and will certainly will not allow that shadow to come. The red crane is the gentlest bird of the sky and water. Humans have already assumed its place in the world as a symbol of a gentle, slender, elegant bird. It’s impossible to ever think of the bird as anything but pure beauty. Once it opens its wings, it displays the gorgeous reflective combination of both water and light. This is what we would call the wizard of the natural wonders.
The paintbrush had been used to for dripping large strokes of paint, while the crane painted in detail as the main focus. I can feel that the people with their backs facings us have something to say. The artist uses the water and sky to extend the perspective to the critical point in the distant. The crane and the girl chatting away, looking out, almost floating together like the clouds moving in the sky, staring at each other taking on the reality of the scenery, a silhouette of daydreams conveying the virtual realm of the mind. In fact, they had already been under these circumstances.
Sometimes when I look at Muse’ paintings, I feel like I exist in a surreal world, in a deep dream that I don't want to wake up from. Fluffy thick clouds so close that I can almost feel it, the sky and myself only a few inches away, metamorphosis of the unknown and mysterious shredded in the sun-penetrated clouds. You can’t help be drawn into the mystery behind it all. Inside the painting, there’s a voice coming from some distance. Whether it is human, or the crane. The fact that they don’t look at us directly does not allow us to know their deepest thoughts, their secrets. People’s moods have a sense of warmth; the warmth comes from their body language. But her body language is always blank; blank is the main source of our curiosity. So she covers this blank canvas with rainbow colors of clouds, shaded by water, they sit compatibly in silence. They become magnets, attracted to each other. The peaceful green grass, the beautiful crane, all become a symbol of our focus.
If you have any questions, after viewing her paintings, whether you know her like the back of your hand, or if you are only strangers. She is someone that will leave you wanting more.
